General

NAS Point Mugu was developed in the late 1940s as the U.S. Navy's major missile development and test facility. This facility was the site where most of the Navy's missiles were developed and tested during the 1950/1960 era, including the AIM-7 Sparrow family, AIM-54 Phoenix air-to-air missile and the Bullpup air-to-surface missile. In 1998 the E-2C Hawkeye arrived to Point Mugu from MCAS Miramar, California. Four E-2C squadrons along with the staff of Commander Airborne Early Warning Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet brought 16 E-2C Hawkeye aircraft and more than 1,000 personnel to NAS Point Mugu. Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55 (VR-55) became a new reserve tenant command at Point Mugu during 1999. VR-55 operates four C-130T Hercules transport aircraft. VR-55 filled the void as VXE-6 was disestablished after 55 years of service to the Navy and the National Science Foundation. Furthermore the CA ANG has based itself here with the C-130J-30.

Layout

Point Mugu operates and maintains two runways, Runway 3-21 is 11,000 feet and Runway 9-27 is 5,500 feet. Runway 3-21 is capable of handling the largest of Air Force aircraft, including the C-5 Galaxy. North of the runways is a large apron of the CA ANG. The Hawkeyes are parked just south of the runway 3-21.

Getting There

NAS Point Mugu is located south of the city of Camarillo and southeast of the city of Oxnard. If you take the Pacific Coast highway, highway 1, to the north, starting in Los Angeles/Santa Monica you will pass the station to the left. If you take the Ventura Ferryway, Route 101, you will have to exit onto the Las Posas Road which will lead towards the station.

Around the Airport

1Missile Park

Follow the Pacific Coast highway, and take the exit Missile Park. If you come from the Santa Monica direction, take a right on the end of the exit (onto Wood road) and the Missile Park is right in front of you. If you come from Oxnard, take the exit, and the Missile Park is in front of you at the end of the exit. Park your car on the parking lot just in front of the QF-4. At the Missile Park a QF-4 and F-14A and several missiles are on display. The parking lot is open from sunrise till sunset. From here, you will have an great view on aircraft landing when runway 21 is in use. Also aircraft entering the runway for departure can been seen. This place offers a good photo opportunity for landing shots, and serial reading in departure. Be aware, that security is driving by on the public road very much.

2CA ANG Apron

From the Missile Park follow the Naval Air Road to the north, until you see a farmer and trailer park on your left. Park your car at the parking lot and you have a perfect view on the CA ANG platform. From this position, all C-130 parked on the platform can be read off easily. Photography is an option, but not preferred.
