General

Red Beach MCOLF are a couple of small airports along the Interstate 5 which are heavily used by the helicopters and Ospreys of MCAS Camp Pendleton and North Island NAS. Although access is limited, some advantage points are possible to spot and photography these fine aircraft. The Old Pacific Highway Trail east of the I-5 and west of the railroad was once used for F-35B exercise. It is best to work from north to south due to the long distances to turn back onto the I-5 Southbound.

Layout

From north to south are a helicopter deck, a small LHA deck, a large LHA deck and a small airport with helideck. East of the I-5 is a old road converted to runway which was used for F-35B exercises.

Getting There

These airports are along the Interstate 5 from Los Angeles to San Diego. On the Southbound side are the needed exits.

Around the Airport

1Vista Point

Driving on the Interstate 5 from LA to San Diego, take the exit to the right to the Vista Point. Park here to have a look onto the Helicopter Landing Spot and the small LHA deck. Photography is possible when the aircraft are on downwind for both.

2At the Crossing

Driving further on the Interstate 5, take the right to Las Pulgas Road. Stop before the crossing and park along the side. Here you can take pictures of the helicopters using the large LHA ramp. You can pass the highway underneath and park to the left, next to the Old Pacific Highway Trail.

3Aliso Creek Rest Area

And again driving on the Interstate 5, take the right towards the Aliso Creek Rest Area and park on the most northern side. From here you have a view onto the Red Beach airport and can picture the aircraft on downwind to land.
