General

Dyess, Texas. Home of the Bone. Two squadrons of B-1B Lancers share the massive ramp with two squadrons of C-130H Hercules tactical transports. 160 miles west of Dallas/Fort Worth this bustling airbase is very approachable, yet not many of 'us' visit the place. Due to the nature of this field, security can be tight, so stay at the spots depicted here to be a bit away from the airport.

Layout

The northern ramps are usually taken up by transient aircraft, of all sorts. Moving south you'll pass the C-130's of the 317th AG, ending up with the bombers of the 7th BW. Across the runway 16/34 is the assault strip, used by the Hercules crews.
On base Dyess AFB has a large collection of preserved aircraft. However, from the outside, only some of them are visible...

Getting There

Leaving Abilene, take Interstate 20, exit 277 and follow FM-707 to the south. After about 2 miles you will see the ramps of Dyess AFB on your left hand side. You reached Spot 1.

Around the Airport

1Scott Street

When coming from the Interstate, after Scott Street you will find a public park on your left hand side. From here you have an interesting view of the ramp, and you will be able to shoot everything approaching runway 16, with approx. 300mm. Due to the sun's position this spot is advisable in the afternoon only.

2707

Coming from Spot 1 you drive underneath the approach path of the tactical airstrip at Dyess. When C-130's are practising here good shots can be taken from the road. At Spot 2 itself you'll need about 300mm for the based transports, and about 220mm for the B-1B's on short final. Trees should not pose much of a problem. Again, due to the sun's position, this spot is advisable for photography from noon onwards only: Bones are notoriously dark when back-lit!

3Pope Road

This spot is perhaps gone by now, or inaccessible, but in recent times it was possible to get to the eastern side of the runway 34 final approach path. From Spot 2 continue south, and continue taking left turns (keeping the airfield on your left hand side). When you encounter the base fence on your right hand side (after about 1.3 miles on Pope Road), bear left, and park your car at the end. Continue by foot through the small wooded area until you find yourself facing the ramps (on the north side of the woods) or until you get to the approach area of runway 34. This spot is great in the morning!

4Air Base Road

Another nice spot for the morning times... From Spot 1, just follow all the right turns until you've arrived at the other side of the approach path. About 250mm needed for aircraft on short final.

5Jennings Street

Here F-4D 65-0976 is preserved in 307th TFS markings. Don't miss it when you're in the neighbourhood!

Landing traffic can be easily seen and photographed at spot 4, but only in the morning. (Piet Luijken)
