CANON 7D - Problem with quality/noise - Warning: Large JPGs

Hi,

could anyone of the CANON 7D owners of you be as kind as to check my pictures if this is the normal standard quality for 7D pictures? I used to shoot with Canon 20D/40D in combination with the CANON 100-400 IS USM for several years now, with a lot of good and satisfying results; and now bought the 7D, to get better AF system among other new features. Unfortunately the results seem to come from a cheap pocket camera, the noise and image quality is as bad as I have not seen before. I sent the camera 2 weeks ago to Canon to check it, and got it back with the sign "repaird / CMOS justified". I went with it to the NATO Air Days, and still have the same results as before. Repaired?! Scam?! Most pictures look like I had used some cheap UV-filters at once... (Images with 40D look fine) I know heatwaves, I know conditions. But never ever has a panning with 1/1000 at F8 looked as crappy as this image:

Most of my 7D pictures look like that. Luckily the airshow season has ended, so CANON cannot ruin any further event for me in this year... The loss was already big enough though.

I would be very happy if maybe someone could upload an image with ISO250 and other settings like my picture? So I could compare it...

Did copy your image to photoshop, and did my editing thing on it, came our really nice,
so is it you camera or your editing? (no offence..)

No noise problems with my 7-d and 100-400, I always shoot 100 iso, only if necessary I use 200 iso or more,
but not with sunny weather.
And if I see some noise I use noise ninja or neat image noise reduction psoftware.

I do RAW, and till now never had any problems with editing. I have to go to ISO250 with 400mm and F8 to reach 1/1000 for jet displays, otherwise I would have a problem with sharpness. (in this particular case it was because I wanted the F3 shot sharp so no playing with shutter time) Noise I also remove with Neat Image, but this noise in the picture is rather strong IMHO. I would say this picture would have been better with my 40D. Also resized the image quality is only "average" to my eyes and needs heavy USM... You can improve it, certainly. But the lack of sharpness combined with the high noise makes me sick.

I heard it is necessary with the 7D to calibrate the camera with every lens. You have to do that yourself, look for info in the manual.

Then maybe it is better to switch to a 1D Mark III or even take the chance to switch to Nikon!

I'm not a 7D owner, but I do know that you should never select ISO 125, 160, 250, 320, etc. since they produce more noise than the regular values like 100, 200, 400.

I only get this kind of noise on my 40D when I crop 100 percent or more.....

I am surprised.... But also happy to hear that the 7D can be calibrated to your lens and that you can do that yourself. That is downright fantastic. No more trips to Canon. You can calibrate at home!

Still I wish I could calibrate my 40D myself (it may be possible with hacked firmware).

Nope, it's not customary to calibrate the camera with every lens, but you do have the ability to do so if found necessary. I'm lucky in that respect, as each of my lenses works flawlessly with my 7D and I didn't need any calibration at all.

If you decide to do calibration on some or all of your lenses, be sure to read up on how to execute the process properly or you might end up in a situation that is worse than where you started from. I understand it's a bit tricky, though I don't have the experience myself.

My stuff has already been to Canon, it is under warranty so the service was free. The only problem is I am still not satisfied with it, as the pictures also show.

Ik denk dat je te maken hebt met een focus probleem. Als je een scherpe foto maakt met een beperkte scherpte diepte dan zie je in het onscherpe deel ook meer ruis dan in het scherpe gedeelte. In jouw geval is de gehele foto onscherp waardoor de ruis over heel de foto zichtbaar is. Camera + lens calibreren denk ik.

If I understand the website correctly they just use the camera's own lens correction feature which means you could do it yourself.

I will try to return the 7D at the local shop I have bought it, hopefully I get another model or money back. If THIS is really the future I can start shooting slides again with this lousy body! I did shots with ISO250 / 40D and you do not even see the noise there... Ridiculous!

Maybe the 18-megapixel, APS-C sized sensor with a 1.6 crop is the reason for the noise.
I am not familiar with Canon anymore, I use a Full Frame 12 MP Nikon D700 an D3 and I see hardly any noise on 200 to 800 ISO pictures.
I looked at your pictures and I have the the opinion that these photo's did not see much editing, I find them very soft and with not much contrast.
Or do I see it wrong???
