Elefsis Air Force Base is located 25 twenty five kilometers west of Athen’s center. It is the location of the Hellenic Air Force Support Command since 1969. In order to accomplish its national tasks the Command covers a wide range of missions such as airlift, SAR, Air fire fighting, Medical Evacuation, also on behalf of the UN and EU. Through the SAR Coordination Centre, the Command is responsible for SAR Ops within Athina FIR. Air firefighting missions demand a huge amount of flights especially in summer time when the risk of fires is higher. During this period, a great number of aircraft deploys to different airfields in order to cover the entire territory. Also important are MEDEVAC missions, which are performed by C-130, AS-332 Super Pumas, A-109 and AB-212, in order to cover the great number of islands. For all these reasons there are a lot of squadrons based here, together with a wide variety of aircraft, active and out of service.
This airbase has a north south orientated runway with aprons on both side. At the main gate, in the southwest corner is the Heritage Park, with several preserved aircraft. Next to it, clockwise, is the Canadair maintenance hangar, followed by the Hercules apron and hangar, G222 apron, Super Puma/AB212 apron and hangar, with also some stored Do-28s. Nearby the north side of the runway you will find some stored aircraft. The apron and hangar to the northeast are for the Orion, while some Albatrosses are stored here. Further moving clockwise you will find the dispersals for the Canadairs, the hangars for the EMB145H AEW&Cs, ERJ135LRs and Gulfstream V.
Elefsis Air Force Base is located west of the city of Athens, in between the highway E94/route 6 to the north and route 8 to the south.
The Hercules 743 is returning here after picking up a newborn baby in need of hospitalization from one of the many isles. This photo by Piet Luijken is taken on base.
