General

Kalamata is the main training base of the Greek air force renown for the 'Kalamata 14' incident. There is some charter traffic as well. Therefore, a lot of flying activity here.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Greece!

Layout

The civil enclave is to the south east of the north-south runway. Near the main gate on the south west side, a small ramp and the T-2 maintenance hangars can be found. The Buckeyes are parked on a long flight line just north of that, to the west of the main runway. The Texans can be found in the north west corner, parked in rows in front of their hangars. The old T-37 are stored and dumped both behind the T-2 flight line and to the north of the civil terminal.

Getting There

There are various ways to get to the airport. The easiest way would be to approach from the north on road 7. Them follow the signs to Messini and the airport. This will be road 82 to the west. Just past the terminal you will get to spots 1 & 2. To find the other spots, take the small road just before the fence starts. It leads through an industrial estate and the road itself is inhabited by gipsies.

The short-cut is faster but difficult to explain. In the village of Thouria you have to go west. This would be a right turn when coming from the north. This small road leads toward Mikromania but this is only signposted from the south. The road makes several turns after a small bridge make a sharp right turn and you arrive at spot 5 opposite the northern ramps.

Around the Airport

1Southern approach

Just before you reach the main gate while driving past the threshold of runway 35 on road 82 there is a farmland track to the left that crosses the railway line running parallel to the main road. After crossing the railway you will be able to take another farm track left, running back in the direction you came from. The foliage blocks your view of the base, but also gives you some shelter from the main road. The southern approach is straight overhead albeit a bit high now.

2Southern side ramp view

Normally, many of the Buckeye fleet are parked in a long flight line. The road is rather busy, but you just need a couple of minutes to check them out. There is a crash-gate, but ideally you have to be somewhat to the west of that.

3South east side ramp view

By taking the northbound road parallel to the runway, challenging the aforementioned gipsies you will reach some spots where you can look through the undergrowth. You are now right opposite the T-2 flight line and just north of a storage area with some desolate T-37 aircraft. Some of these can be identified from this spot. This small road can be found from the north as well, just keep taking the roads closest to the base all the time. There are more roads and track than illustrated on the map.

4East side view

About halfway down the runway you can watch the aircraft in a less than ideal way. Mostly, they will fly a circuit before landing so they will pass rather high before coming in. The bushes prevent a clear view, but the taxiway is just behind it!

5North east side ramp view

This is by far the most open space with a clear view on the taxiway and opposite T-6 ramps. Alas, it is near two bends in the road giving you very short warning as well as some hazardous traffic moments. Obviously, you are in full sight yourself. So have a quick look at the many T-6 and do not hang around too long.

6Northern approach

Following the road northbound, it keeps on hugging the base, Again, the foliage hampers a clear view. The northern approach goes straight over this road which itself continues to Aris and Triodus. Depending on the season you will be able to see something of the T-6-ramp and hangars through the bushes.

Becoming rather extinct, Kalamáta is the only place were you can still catch a Buckeye. (spot 1, August 2010, Gijs ten Velde)
