General

Tanagra is the homebase of 114 PM, one of the wings of the Hellenic Air Force. The 114 CW was formed on August 22, 1956, at Tanagra Airport. At that date, the 341, 342 and 343 Interception Squadrons were integrated with F-86E Sabre aircraft. Later, T-33As were based here with 361 sq. In 1964 it was time for the F-104G to be based here, which were replaced by the F-102A Delta Dagger after the Starfighters were moved to Araxos. In the beginning of 1977 the F-102As were retired and replaced by the Mirage F-1CGs with the 332 and 342 squadrons. The Mirage 2000EGs entered service in 1988 and replaced the F-1s of 332 sq. In 2003 342 squadron was disbanded and the F-1CG was retired. At this moment the 331 sq flies the Mirage 2000EG, while 332 sq is transferring to the new Mirage 2000-5.

Layout

Tanagra has one runway, with the dispersal area for 331 sq to the north, and the dispersal area of 332 sq to the south. HAI is located in the southeast corner of the field.

Getting There

The airbase Tanagra is located close to the highway E75, from Athens to Thessaloniki. It is located between the city of Shimatari and Tanagra. There are signs towards the HAI and 114 PM.

Around the Airport

1Main Gate

After exiting the highway, take the route towards Tanagra to cross the highway underneath. Take the road to the left, than the first right, the first left to cross the railroad to arrive at the main gate. The main gate has a Starfighter as gate guard and a small parking place. More importantly, the main gate is located next to the taxiway and close to the fuel leag check area. Spotting couldn't be easier although the guard is standing next to you, next to some locals.

2North Dump

After returning from the main gate, take the first left, to drive along the railroad to the north. There are some shops here as well as a train depot. From the train depot soem aircraft at the north dump can be seen.

3HAI overview

After returning from the main gate, take the first right to arrive at a dirt road along the gate along the east side. Along the road you will have a view onto the HAI apron, although you will need a big scope. Drive along the road for the best angle.

4Westerly Landings

Continue along the dirt road to enter a secondary road. Take a left to the north to cross the railroad. At this bridge position yourself at the other side of the bridge for a nice position for landing aircraft.

5HAI dump

If you drive towards the south, there is a crossing towards the HAI parking. If you continue the road there is another crossing. Take the road to the right to drive along the fence of HAI. You will pass the dump of HAI towards a gate. Along this road a view onto the HAI apron will be possible.

6Easterly Landings

To arrive at the spot for landings with an easterly wind, we start at the main gate. Turn back to cross the railroad and take a left. Via a right turn you will enter the village of Shimatari. At the first major crossing take a left and drive towards the railroad. Follow the railroad towards its crossing with a road from north to south. Take a left here, cross the railroad and follow towards Tanagra. You will pass a road to the right towards the northwest gate. Take the road to the left at the next crossing towards the southwest gate. Position yourself here unconspiciously for landing shots or drive towards the gate for a look at the preserved aircraft here..

7Northwest Gate

Take the former road towards the Nortwest gate to have a look at the aprons here.

8View onto the Airport

Take the road to the north towards the railroad. Just before, there is a road to the right. At the end, due to the elevated position you will have a view onto the aprons.
