General

Formerly a 'green airfield', created in 1949 and with a 600 m grass runway for a long time, this airfield received a paved runway and taxiways in 2002 to enable aircraft up to 6000 kg to use it. In March 2014, it became Breda International Airport, meaning it has passenger handling and customs facilities. There is no air traffic control though, just flight information. This can be a busy place with all sorts of general aviation, including training aircraft, skydiving flights and the Flying Museum of Seppe.

The use of Breda in the name is somewhat confusing as that is not the nearest city (which is Roosendaal). For more confusion: the nearest village is Bosschenhoofd but the name used to be coupled to Hoeven, a village a bit further away. Breda/Seppe is the official name as per aeronautical publications. The airfield is closed for flights outside the daylight period.

Layout

The paved, more or less east-west, runway is 830 m long with a grass strip along two thirds of its southern edge. The latter is only for (historic) aircraft with a tail skid. North of the runway is the part that mostly already existed in the Seppe era. The south side is regarded as the Breda International part, built much later. More construction is going on, to expand what is called Seppe Airparc for aviation-related companies. Viewing is easy from the outside but for a closer look and photography near the hangars permission to go airside is needed. Inquiries can be made at the aerodrome office; expect an escort to be needed.

Getting There

Driving here is easy, as Seppe is conveniently located along the A58 motorway between Roosendaal and Etten-Leur (and Breda). The exit to take is number 21 for Rucphen and Bosschenhoofd after which the field is signposted. For public transport, Buurtbus line 211 between Roosendaal and Oudenbosch can be used on weekdays. Get off in Bosschenhoofd, at the Beatrixstraat or St. Gerardushof, from where it is a 10-15 minute walk to spot 1. Of course, flying in is possible too, with most private planes.

Around the Airport

1Entrance North

As mentioned above, this is the part that made up Seppe airfield for many decades, before the expansion. It cannot be missed after leaving the roundabout at the Pastoor van Breugelstraat towards the field. The Vliegend Museum Seppe is here, keeping a very interesting collection of historic aircraft of which almost a dozen are airworthy and flying regularly. Restaurant De Cockpit is here as well, with of course a terrace close to the action. The aerodrome office, aeroclub Vliegclub Seppe, parachuting club Skydive ENPC (first in the Netherlands) and maintenance company Mastenbroek Aeroskill are also to be found here. There is quite some parking space but should that still be full, try the adjacent sports complex lot.

2Landing runway 06

For a different angle than along the runway on the movements at the 06 side, one can take position here along the Bredasebaan where landing aircraft fly over and departures roll by at short distance. Obviously, this is a no stoppig area for vehicles, if visiting by car park at spot 1 or 3. There are no problems getting here on foot or by bicycle. At all times respect the private property along the road!

3Threshold runway 06

Continuing from the previous spots, the first turn-off from the perimeter road leads to this one. There is room to park a few cars for those who intend to stay close the vehicle, spotting at the fence at the very beginning of runway 06. The whole area between here and spots 4 and 5 is suitable to do so actually, so for the other options see there.

4Entrance South

Driving a bit further along the perimeter road Bredasebaan, parallel to the motorway, will take you to this entrance. The parking lot on the left is the one for the public; the one on the right is reserved for business. The first thing to catch the eye will be the preserved Grob on a stick, see the separate panel in this guide. The quickest access by bicycle, if coming from the west, is via the cycling track beginning at spot 3.

This is the best starting point for spotting as there is usually plenty of room to legally park and the best viewing points are right next to the parking lot. As mentioned with spot 3, the whole area between that one and here is perfect for plane watching. You are also close to the facilities of the terminal here. Do not forget to look far right along the row of hangars, to see an Antonov 2 sitting there (see next spot also).

5Terminal

The relatively new terminal building houses a hotel and restaurant Bargo, among other facilities. This restaurant, too, has a terrace bordering the active airfield part. There is no public vehicle access further than the turnaround loop in front of the terminal, but continuing on foot or bicycle along the back side of the hangars with their businesses is not a problem and can be tried to get a closer look at ex CNE Air An-2 D-FAIR. Her markings have been removed but for the time she can be seen between the two large buildings.

6Landing runway 24

To obtain a similar look as from spot 2 but with wind from the west, continue eastbound via the Bredasebaan from the previous spots, then turn left below the huge billboard. This road turns into one where cyclists have priority, but cars are allowed to use it. Approaching the runway, there are a few options to park if you stay with the vehicle.

Ron Frijlink caught the landing on runway 06 of the green version of one of the Pink Skyvans, from spot 3.

This M600, a highly advanced version of the Piper PA-46 Malibu, is a resident since 2021 and was also photographed from spot 4, by Berend Jan Floor.
