General

RNAS Culdrose, or HMS Seahawk, is situated just south of Helston in Cornwall, in the Southwest of England. Culdrose is one of the major airfields of the Fleet Air Arm. Many helicopter squadrons are based here.

Layout

The airfield is very open, although it is situated on a hill, so it is not possible to see the entire airfield from one position. The best position to watch the aircraft is at the official spotter's corner at spot 4 of our airfield guide.

Getting There

To get to Culdrose and coming from the East, follow the A390, the A39 and the A394 to Helston. When you enter Helston while driving on the A394/Clodgey Lane, you will see Culdrose. RNAS Culdrose is signposted on the A394.

Around the Airport

1Flambards Theme Park

The first spot to stop is at the Flambards Theme Park. Some years ago, a total of over twenty aircraft could be found here. Nowadays, most of these were sold to finance new attractions. To see all aircraft currently on site, you need to buy a ticket.

2Runway 18

The first stop at RNAS Culdrose itself is found when you follow a small road around the base fence on the North side. At the first roundabout, when coming from spot 1, take the third exit. When you follow this road, try to keep the airfield on you right-hand side. When you reach spot 2, it should be possible to see aircraft outside at the SFDO. When you follow the road to the North, you will find a small campsite. It must be possible to keep following the road around the base, but this has not be done by us before.

3Main gate

To get to spot 3, go back to the roundabout and take the third exit. When you drive on this road, the A3083, you will see the airfield on your left. When driving here, you should be able to see some Merlins when they are parked outside, but stopping is not allowed here. After 2 kilometres, you will see the main gate of the airfield on your left and a preserved Seahawk at the right side of the road.

4Spotters corner

To get to the spotters corner, keep following the A3083 for another two kilometres. Also on this part of the road, you can see parked helicopters outside, but stopping here is not allowed officially. After the two kilometres you must go left into the B3293. After one kilometre, go left and follow this road towards the base. You will see the spotter's corner in front of you after another kilometre.
