Founed as a flying training base 1916, Waddington became a bomber base in 1926, after a closure of six years. The last bomber to be based here was of course the famous Vulcan, being retired on 31 March 1984. Nowadays, RAF Waddington is the RAF's Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) hub. It is home to a fleet of Beech Shadow R1s and RC-135W Rivet Joint/Airseekers. and is an operating base for the RAF's MQ-9 Reaper. The base also has a tradition of organising a very fine airshow and regularly hosts exercises with foreign participants.
The airfield is quite open on several sides. In the northeast, the W.A.V.E. offers fine facilities to enthusiasts, near the runway threshold and taxiways leading to it. With more effort, the runway can also be overlooked on the other side and there are various other spotting and photo spots. The single operational runway runs nearly north/south and two thirds of it have base structures on both sides.
RAF Waddington is located in Lincolnshire, south of the city of Lincoln. From Lincoln drive south via the A15 and find the airfield and spots to your right, while the the motorists viewing area/parking will be to your left. If you come from another direction, take the A1 northbound and then follow the A15 towards Lincoln.
Those visiting by public transport should expect to walk 2 km south along a rough grassy verge from Bracebridge Heath, a village on the Stagecoach route 1 that links Grantham to Lincoln. Although hourly on most days, buses are less frequent on a Sunday. Cyclists might choose to ride from Metheringham Station to avoid steep gradients on the A15.
The air bases Scampton, Coningsby, Cranwell and Barkston Heath plus the Newark Air Museum can all be reached in about a half hours' drive from here. There are no direct bus links from Waddington to these locations however.
Aircraft vacating the active runway can be easily photographed from spot 7 as this picture by Piet Luijken of a Su-30MKI of the Indian Air Force shows.
As this photo by Melchior Timmers shows, some nice taxi shots can be made at spot 2.
