General

RAF Leeming started operating as a Bomber Station in July 1940, and based aircraft at the time included the Lancaster. Since the mid-eighties, following a major refurbishment, it was used as a major Tornado F3 base until 2008. After that, Hawks of 100sq and the JFACTSU (Joint Forward Air Controllers Training and Standards Unit) as well as some Tutor units are based here. Nowadays, it is mostly the latter although there is a Qatari Hawk training squadron operating from here and Hawker Hunter Aviation (HHA) houses some of their Hawker Hunters.

Layout

The runway is north-south orientated with the apron for the Hawks and the shelter area on the east side. When operating to the north, aircraft from the shelter area will normally cross the runway and taxi to the runway threshold via the western taxiway.

Getting There

Driving to Leeming is quite simple as it is located next to the A1 highway. There are exits for Leeming Bar, Leeming and RAF Leeming indicated along this highway.

Around the Airport

1South landing

Take the A1 exit to RAF Leeming and follow the signs to RAF Leeming. When passing the approach lights, on the left side, continue and park your car on the side after the end of the 'No Parking' zone. Walk back and take the dirt road to the right, to a hay shed. Continue to walk along the lands to the beginning of the runway, but please be careful of the crops! You will end up at crashgate nr 7. After 12:00 hours LT, walk to the other side. All aircraft landing here can be photographed and spotted. All aircraft taking off can be easily spotted, photography is difficult due to heatwaves.

2Crash gate 8

When driving on the A1, follow the signs to Leeming and especially to the Lorry/Truck parking. At this parking, with a garage and a cafe, there is a small road leading to crash gate Nr8. At this crash gate, you will have a view on the runway and be very close to the west taxiway. However, you will be standing lower than the taxiway and runway, which will be a disadvantage, especially with high grass, so take some steps with you. Furthermore, the view of the approach of landing aircraft is completely obstructed. At the truck parking spot, you will be standing higher and have a better view of the runway and taxiway, although some trees obstruct your view.

3Viewing Area

Take the exit 'Leeming' from the A1 and proceed to Leeming Bar. You will drive to the north with the airfield on your right. Just before the 'Willow Tree' pub, there is a small road into a parking area which is the official Viewing Area. The area is surrounded by a large fence with barbed wire on top, so do take steps with you. You will have a proper view on the Hawks' flightline, only used during operating hours, and the visitor's parking spot. Also the shelters can be seen. You will need some 500 mm on your digital camera for photography during take off and landing.

4North landing

This spot can be used when runway 34 is in use. Take the exit of the A1 towards Leeming Bar for this spot. Follow the signs towards the A684. After passing the approach lights, take the first road to the right, just before some houses. If you miss this one, just take the next to the right, after these houses. Follow the road until there is a crossing. Take the left one in the morning or the right one in the afternoon. The dirt road to the right will lead towards a car dump.

This Hawk taxies back from its landing and is taken from spot2 ( Karl Drage )
