1West Landing
Just before the approach lights, there is a small road leading to a crash gate. You can park your car here, leaving the gate unobstructed, and position yourself for landings on the western side. When you walk up the small hill on the other side of the road, you will have a view of the airfield and will be able to spot the visitor's parking spot, the flight line and the Army hangar. Photographic possibilities are best in the afternoon, when the aircraft taxi to and from the runway, but also for the aircraft parked at the 'Visiting Aircraft' platform.
2Open Fence
Driving to the north along the A919, there is an easy view through the fence. Park your car at spot 1 and walk to this gate for some nice photo possibilities in the afternoon.
3Threshold 22
Follow the A919 into Leuchars towards the church and pass the Main Gate with the gate guards. Drive past the bus stop turning circle as well. After about 100 meters, there is a road to the right called Wessex Avenue. Drive up this road and take the second right called Earlshall road. This is a narrow country road and has a concealed bend, so be careful. At the end of this road, you will come to a farm gate which leads to a dirt track. There is public right of way here and it is ok to drive on. Please remember to shut the gate and check if it is closed. Be careful, as there may be horses or cattle about. There are two other sets of gates to pass on this track. Keep driving round and you will see the University Air Squadron hangar in front of you - the Tutors may or may not be sitting outside. You will also see the Phantom FG1 in the 43 Sqn HAS Complex from this track.
4Crash Gate 27
Keep driving down this track and eventually you will come to a gate on the edge of a forest. You cannot drive any further at this point. It is best to park your car off the track and walk on foot from here. If you follow the track down towards the runway, you will get close to the taxiway on the North side of the runway, but you are shooting into the sun here. A new high fence has been erected here, making things difficult for photography.
5East Landing
If you like to make landing pictures with westerly winds and do not mind to walk a bit, this is the spot for you. Continue along the track through the forest until you reach the beach. Here you can walk back underneath the approach lights and will eventually reach far enough to get landing shots with the sun in your back. After a 30-minute walk from spot 4 you will be at this spot for all landing traffic. Aircraft could be a bit high though.
