General

At Syerston you will find a lot of gliders, both powered and non-powered examples. Maintenance and training are done here for all RAF gliders. Moreover, the base holds some glider units as well.

Layout

The airfield used to be a WWII bomber base and was used for training from the 1950s onward. Apart from the concrete three runway lay-out with the circular taxiway, not much is left. The two large hangars containing all the gliders are on the south side of the disused runway 12/30. Bare in mind that the gliders do not have to use the regular runways!

Getting There

Syerston is conveniently located along the A46 road from Nottingham to Newark-on-Trent.

Around the Airport

1Northeast side approach

From the A46, take Trent Lane toward the river. This is north of the airfield. After about 500 metres, make a left. At the T-junction, again go left a bit for a good view at the aircraft, which are approaching runway 25.

2Longhedge Lane

Go back to the A46 and continue to the airfield. Just before you reach the perimeter, you can go right into Longhedge Lane. This is a dead end street that runs parallel to runway 16/34 and the taxiway. You will be opposite to one of the large hangars as well and have a good view of the activities on runway 16/34, the ramp and runway 07/25 also.

3South side approach

Lastly, you can sit in the approach of runway 34. Again, you have to get onto the A46. Just after turning onto the A46 from Longhedge Lane, there is a crash gate with a desolate piece of tarmac on the opposite side of the road. Park your car there and walk behind the hedge into the farmland to obtain a better angle.
Alternatively, from spot 2 continue on Longhedge Lane crossing the A46. Go right into an old piece of taxiway and dispersal. The aircraft will be straight overhead, good for some artistic shots.

4Touring the hangars

Sometimes, the pole at the gate is open. If so, continue onto the airfield and report to airfield operations to ask if it is possible to have a look in the hangars. Do not go wandering over the airfield by yourself!
