1East side approach - north side
After passing the base on the A1 there is a large roundabout. Take the exit towards Peterborough. Driving southbound, there is a layby after about 1 km. Park your car there and walk a few hundred meters to the south. Be very careful, the traffic is very intense. There is an entrance road from were you can watch the aircraft. Obviously, you are on the wrong side for decent photography. But you can see the main ramp and log some codes.
Alternatively, you can park you car in this entrance road as well but keep in mind that this is a private road.
2East side approach - south side
For a better spot, proceed further south on the A1. Jus after you have passed the runway lights, there is a fenced off farm road. If you can throw your car in, it offers better possibilities than spot 1. You can also walk to this spot from the aforementioned layby, which is about 800 metres to the north.
From the south side it is possible to park your car in Wittering village and walk back. A better option might be to take Barnack Drift which, is just north of the layby and park your car well off the road on the shoulder.
3East side approach - further afield
For a more relaxed spot, albeit a lot further away from the centerline, go south on the A1 again. Take the road to Barnack on the left, which is not that far from the gate. You will still be opposite Wittering village. Head along the road and park your car in one of the farmers' field entrances. The haphazard way of approaching will be a bit frustrating for photography here, you will need a big lens. But for spotting it is quite okay.
4South side ramp view
Before the road to Barnack, but after the base gate when coming from the north, is the access road to Wittering village, Townsend Road. Follow this through the village. After the village it will twist and turn. You can leave your car at the first sharp left corner were the road meets the base fence. Walk up and down a bit to see parts of the ramp between the buildings.
5South side taxiway
While continuing on the road from spot 4, it turns left away from the base. Shortly after that, there is a road to the right. This is a private road. If you wish to stay longer, park at the entrance and walk the 1,25km to the fence. There is a crash gate were you will be near the taxiway. Good for spotting on the runway as well.
6West side approach
Go back to the road and make a right, this is the Old Oundle Road. It meets the A47, go right. You will now be driving along the old RAF Collyweston part of the base. When the A47 bends left, there is a road forking off to the right. Take that road and immediately go right again. From this spot you can watch the approach to runway 08. The aircraft are still a bit high though.
7Northwest side
The roads on the north side all look promising on the map, but terrain height and undergrowth prevent a clear view. Most can be reached from either the A43, that connects the A1 with the A47 and runs along Easton on the Hill and Collyweston, or the Racecourse Road. For a peek in the northwestern area with practise dispersals, take Cliffe Road, This is the only southbound road in Easton on the Hill and will lead to a crash gate near the fire pit.
